Subject Matter Tutorials Subject Matter Tutorials

A Subject Matter Tutorial is designed for students who are experiencing difficulty in one particular subject area, but may be performing well in other courses. Students are matched with an appropriate tutor and are usually seen twice a week for one-hour sessions. We ask that students make an initial ten week commitment.

Throughout the program, students are taught effective strategies for learning the subject. While we work within the framework of current courses and will spend some time explaining homework and preparing for tests, we focus our efforts on skills development and filling in gaps of knowledge.

An important component of all tutorials is general academic support, which emphasizes fundamental learning and study skills. These may include classroom behavior, long-range planning, organization, note taking, and test preparation. Students are taught study techniques that are unique to the subject but that may also be effective in other academic endeavors.

As a part of our ongoing evaluation process, tutorial reports are e-mailed home following each session. We may also ask to contact a student's classroom teacher to discuss the student's performance or to make suggestions for modifications. Parents will be contacted periodically by the tutor and should feel free to call to discuss their son or daughter's progress with the tutor or the Admission Director at any time.
